People who are thinking about adding a degree in education to their resume will be happy to know that high school teacher was recently named one of the Best Jobs of 2012 by U.S. News and World Report.
According to the new list, prospective teachers with a 4-year degree on their resume and the right state certification requirements can earn a median wage of $53,230, and while all public high schools require licensure, many private institutions do not.
National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel told the news agency that schools are looking for professionals who are excited about education and are involved in the community.
"Schools do not just want someone who is an excellent lecturer or has great 'platform' skills, secondary students don't want someone to stand there and lecture," Van Roekel added. "Prospective candidates would be well served to seek out opportunities to become part of the community in advance of seeking employment."
Currently, teachers in the New York City and Chicago area are among the highest-paid in the nation, with the best-paid percent in the field making approximately $83,230 annually.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment opportunities for secondary school teachers are expected to increase by 9% through 2018.
