Creating an Outstanding Health Care Resume Will Increase Options

Despite an increase in demand for medical workers across the U.S., job seekers pursuing a career in health care must not only have the right skills, but be business savvy in order to expand their options for a successful long-term career.

- Be flexible

If you already have a background in health care or nursing and are looking to for a change or a new job, you need to be able to transfer your skills across a range of occupations.

Carmen Kosicek, author of "Nurses, Jobs and Money," told the Chicago Herald News that with the health care industry changing, workers can no longer afford to think that their experience will land them a high-paying position.

"Let’s say you start in med-surg and you’re a rock star of a nurse," Kosicek told the news agency. "Why should your supervisor let you go? And if you do get to that specialty unit, your skills amount to starting an IV and charting, not reading fetal monitors. So why can’t it be different?"

- Tailor your resume to show off your skills

As a health care professional, you need to create a  resume that will highlight how your skills will benefit a specific position.

Karen Riley, a Chicago-based health care recruiter, told the Chicago Tribune, that job seekers should not be afraid to boast about their past achievements.

"Hospitals and medical offices can boost their credibility with known and not-so-known experts on their staffs," Riley noted. "A nurse who has given a presentation on something like emergency prenatal care will stand out from her or his peers. Who wouldn't want to hire someone who has a publicized area of expertise."

Using an online resume builder can help you create a strong health care resume that will make you stand out from other applicants.

- Evaluate your career training

Depending on what type of job you are looking for, you may need to reevaluate your education and career training to make sure you have the necessary skills needed for the position.

In a clinical regulated field such as health care, you need a certificate or license in order to practice. Make sure your credentials are up-to-date and match the job description, especially if you are a nurse looking to transition into another area of the industry, where there may be more job openings.

"Most people compartmentalize nursing," Kosicek said, "but it’s not just for women and it’s not just for young people. It’s a career with unlimited opportunities."
