College Students Should Plan Ahead to Ensure Career Success

With a new academic year underway, many students may be too busy studying to think about their future job search, but a new survey found that many people believe its never to early for college students to start planning for better ways to compete in today's job market.

The survey found that 57% of adults ages 25 to 54 believe that college students should participate in an internship program while attending school. According to those who had an internship in college, the experience helped them gain valuable networking contacts and helped them in their future job search by gaining key job-related skills.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, those who worked in a paid internship had a slight advantage over students who participated in an unpaid program.

For students entering college who are looking to add an in-demand degree to their resumes, majoring in engineering, business, health and computer science appears to offer the most opportunities for job growth over the next several years.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that professionals with an advanced degree on their resume have the potential to earn $1,000 more per week than those with some or no college education.
